Five minutes from most of it

Around Deep Creek

What is actually worth doing near the house, in every season — with the address and the operator’s own site, so you can check hours yourself before you drive.

What's open right now?

This page is the durable version. Bertha is the current one — she checks against the same verified list, knows what time it is, and will tell you what is open tonight rather than what exists in general.

Every season is the point

Deep Creek is not a summer lake with a quiet off-season. The house gets used hardest in winter.

WinterWisp is about five minutes away — skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Then the hot tub, the fire table and the fireplace, in that order. AWD or 4WD strongly recommended.
SpringWaterfalls run hardest. Muddy Creek Falls is Maryland’s tallest and it is a short walk, not an expedition. Trails dry out, the lake is quiet, and nothing is booked solid.
SummerBoats, kayaks and paddleboards on the lake; the state park beaches; the aerial park across the bridge. Long evenings on the deck with the fire table lit anyway.
FallThe best-kept part of the year here. The ridge turns, the trails empty out, the fire pit earns its keep, and the drive in along Garrett Highway is worth the trip on its own. Autumn Glory, the county’s big festival, runs 7–11 October 2026.

Outside

Parks, falls and trails — and you have the house’s Maryland State Park Pass.

Swallow Falls TrailOld-growth hemlock and Maryland’s tallest waterfall, under fifteen minutes away. The classic first-morning walk. A day-use reservation is required on weekends and holidays, Memorial Day to Labor Day plus weekends in May, September and October. Dogs are not permitted in the day-use area.2470 Maple Glade Road, Oakland, MD 21550Official site
Muddy Creek FallsThe falls themselves, inside Swallow Falls State Park. Short hike, big payoff, good in all four seasons — same weekend-and-holiday reservation rule, and no dogs on the Canyon Trail in season.Swallow Falls State Park, Oakland, MDOfficial site

On the water, and up in the air

The house has a lake view, not lake access — the water is across Garrett Highway. These are how you get on it.
